The Best Cardio Workout!

The Best Cardio Workout!
Phil Hueston, PES, YFS, YSAS

The debate has raged in the fitness industry for at least 2 decades.

Which cardio workout is the best?

Treadmills? Jump ropes? Ellipticals? Walking? Being chased by a jungle cat?

After all of this, the answer was right in front of us all the time. The best cardio workout for you is...

The one (or more) you will consistently

do and "enjoy!"

We are big fans of shorter term, moderate to high intensity (think sprints instead of jogging) workouts for their efficiency and positive impact on muscular development. Here's an example:

Lay out two cones or other markers 10 yards apart. Then, follow this progression:

  1. 1 sprint, 5 seconds rest
  2. 2 sprints, 5 seconds rest
  3. 3 sprints, 7-10 seconds rest
  4. 4 sprints, 15 seconds rest
  5. 5 sprints, 20 seconds rest
  6. 5 sprints, 20 seconds rest
  7. 4 sprints, 15 seconds rest
  8. 3 sprints, 7-10 seconds rest
  9. 2 sprints, 5 seconds rest
  10. 1 sprint, DONE!

As your cardio endurance increases, you can reduce rest time or even repeat this full progression or part of it.

Now, if you can't, or really just don't enjoy this kind of workout, fine. If you prefer walking for 30 minutes or jumping rope for 10-15 minutes, great.

The point here is: do what you will repeat! Repetition is the key to consistency and results!
